DOD travel restrictions have suspended upcoming performances by the U.S. Army Field Band from Fort Meade, Md., but the band is playing on with daily performances onYouTube and Facebook.

And Sgt. 1st Class Michaela Shelton, a member of the band, put together a children’s virtual sing-along, reported WBAL-TV. The station’s report features the video.

“I had been hearing from a lot of parents that there has been a lot of anxiety at home for kids who are adjusting to this new normal, so I thought I’d reach out to my children’s chorus, who are all military children,” Shelton said.

The video features 18 children between the ages of four and 12 performing a number from “The Sound of Music.” The students recorded themselves singing along, and Shelton had a colleague edit their contributions into one video.

“And then other people just join in, and then you have all these people singing together, and it’s really cool,” said Avie McElver, 9, who recorded the song on her dad’s cell phone.

“Music has the power to heal and inspire and unite,” Shelton said.
