A recent letter sent by Congresswoman Deb Haaland and signed by 35 U.S. representatives outlined the pervasive financial crisis many military families are facing as a result the COVID-19 pandemic.

“From the inability to follow through with their change of station, separation, or retirement leading them to pay for two residences, to spouse job losses, and repurchasing necessities, military families find themselves in extreme financial distress,” Rep. Haaland and the members wrote in the letter.

The memo, addressed to Defense Secretary Mark Esper, warned that monetary caps under current grant and loan programs are not high enough to meet the needs of military families during the coronavirus crisis. The U.S. representatives urged DOD officials to “swift action” and asked that Commanders are issued guidance to better serve families moving forward.
