In response to a recent Department of Defense challenge to develop a cost-effective ventilator to aid coronavirus patients, a team of engineers and staff at Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City recently completed a prototype which has been running nonstop for four days, reports Panama City News Herald.
Engineers say that it is constructed from items that can be purchased and assembled from any local hardware or auto parts store. It weighs 35 pounds, runs on a 120 VAC, and can be constructed within a day.
“It isn’t pretty, but it will get the job done for now,” said NSWC PC Mechanical Engineer Andrew Schicho. Bay County, home to NSWC PC, was a 2019 ADC Great American Defense Community.
