PAWTUCKET, RI (July 19, 2019) – Barrington, Rhode Island native Sean Spicer provided a life-changing moment for a wounded Veteran at Friday’s Pawtucket Red Sox game. Representing The Independence Fund, a national nonprofit assisting wounded Veterans, Sean Spicer the former White House Press Secretary and member of Independence Fund’s Board of Directors partnered with the Paw Sox to present Marine Veteran Carlos Lopes with an all-terrain tracked wheelchair, worth more than $16,000.
“It means the world to me to be a part of presentations like this,” said Spicer, the former White House Press Secretary, and board member for The Independence Fund who has served in the military for 20 years “Understanding the impact these chairs have in restoring the freedom and independence of our wounded warriors has tremendous impact on me.” Spicer also threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the game and admitted that it was a unique experience for him, “Growing up in this area—coming to these games when I was younger, it really brought back memories. Looking back on things then, I never expected that I would have been out here doing this. It’s been a surreal experience.”
Lopes, deployed to Northwestern Iraq in 2005 with the 2ndBattalion, 8thMarines and was injured while saving one of his fellow Marines, who fell from a rooftop during a combat mission. Lopes suffered major spinal cord injuries and was partially parylyzed, while his fellow Marine counterpart sustained only minor injuries.
The Independence Fund has provided more than 2,300 of these all-terrain chairs through its mobility program since its 2007 inception. The chairs provide wounded Veterans the ability to regain independence lost through their injuries.
