VA Safe Firearm Storage Toolkit
VA has released the Safe Firearm Storage Toolkit, which was developed in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the firearms industry. The toolkit guides communities through the process of building coalitions to raise awareness about safe storage and its connection to suicide prevention.
- A pilot toolkit was introduced in six states and the District of Columbia, and feedback from the pilot sites was incorporated into the version we are sharing with you today. Participating communities were encouraged to use the guide to develop a community action plan and spread the word through community programming.
Last week the importance of storing firearms & lethal means safety was discussed on a webcast hosted by the United States Concealed Carry Association titled Protecting Mental Health and Preventing Suicide During COVID-19, which highlights our VA Suicide Prevention Director, Dr. Miller and leaders from AFSP & NSSF.
VA, AFSP, and NSSF invite you to download the toolkit and share the webcast encouraging everyone to take action to prevent suicide by promoting safe storage.
